Orghidan, C. Constantin

The collection of the engineer Constantin Orghidan is the most representative numismatic ensemble ever achieved by Romanian collector.

The over ten thousand artifacts - coins (Greek, Roman, Byzantine, medieval), seals, medals, engraved gems, antique and Byzantine jewels, royal Assyrian and Bay;lonian  seals, Egyptian scarabs - form the most diverse, representative and important assembly in the history of the Romanian numismatics.

Constantin C. Orghidan (June 22, 1874 - August 29, 1944), Oţelu Roşu, Caras Severin) is an eminent engineer known in the history of the Romanian culture as an archaeologist and, particularly, as a numismatist and collector. He was elected Honorary Member of the Romanian Academy (May 31, 1942) and of the Romanian Numismatic Society (1924).

At the same time, a passionate collector of an outstanding selection of 10,167 items, among which 8,025 Greek, Roman, Byzantine, medieval, modern and contemporary coinage, medals, seals, weights, engraved stones, archaeological objects and cameos, one of them of an impressive size ("The Orghidan Cameo"), donated to the Romanian Academy Library.
