The architectural complex of Brebu, conceived as a monastery and Princely Court, is the foundation of Voivode Matei Basarab, who left it unfinished. The prince exempted from taxes the villagers in order to achieve the building. As its estate was too small, the voivode indemnified the peasants of Podu Cheii, offering them other lands in exchange. Misunderstandings between the monks and the peasants continued until 1863, when the monastery became a parish church and the estates were included in the Eforia Spitalelor Civile (The Civil Hospital Ephoria).
